Xerosis
Dry skin, also called xerosis, is a frequent problem. This is the clinical term for dry, rough, cracking, scaly skin. Mutating your bathing routine will help preserve your skin's moisture. Central heating of home and other buildings is very drying to the skin. The climate in central Illinois and particlarly Champaign-Urbana makes dry skin symptoms more severe, specially for our students who come from more humid geographical areas. Bathing offers the skin will moisturize temporarily, but it removes the skin's oily lipid layer and in the long run causes more moisture loss than gain.
Dry skin having fine scaling, usually most salient on the legs. It can happen at any age, but the older a person gets the more commonly xerosis is present. It is an anomalistic dryness of the skin ( xeroderma ), of the conjunctiva of the eye ( xerophthalmia ), or of the mucous membranes such as dry mouth ( xerostomia ). If this oil is removed, then the skin becomes dry that can further to cracking, which can lead to inflammation. Xerosis is generally a long-term problem that returns often, especially in the winter.
Causes of Xerosis
The common Causes of Xerosis :
- The main reason of xerosis is lack of moisture .
- The extreme weight loss is also the main factor of xerosis.
- Excessive showering or swimming , specially in heavely chlorinated hot or cold water .
- Allergens can trigger in the production of xerosis.
- Xerosis or dry skin may be emblem to many causes such as general dehydration , Vitamin A deficiency and diabetes .
- By using the harsh soap, may lead to the condition of xerosis.
- Patients are excessively sensitive to temperature changes.
- Hormones abnormality from the thyroid gland may result to xerosis.
Symptoms of Xerosis
Some Symptoms of Xerosis :
- Itching.
- Flaking and fine lines.
- Ulcers infections.
- Diabetes.
- Skin feels rough.
- Cracks in the skin.
- Redness.
Treatment of Xerosis
- Emollients are creams that can be applied to the affected area to prevent water from evaporating from the skin's surface.
- A diabetic patient with xerosis, is cured with a prescription medicated lotion. In many cases, xerosis can cause serious complications in diabetic patients, requiring amputation of the foot.
- Alpha hydroxyacid lotions.
- Oils can be added to bath water , but they are not as effective as emollient creams. .
- The skin-sensitive soap should not be used on your xerotic skin. When bathing delimit the use of soap to your face, armpits, genital area, and feet.
- When you have finished swimming, wash off the chlorine with cool to warm water.
- Creams and lotions which have keratolytic agents, such as urea , salicylate , lactic acid , vitamin A , and propylene glycols are also procurable. These lotions are not as hydrolyzing as emollients .
- Many people have seen marked amelioration with natural formulas such as Epitrex.
