Eye Stye


Eye stye is an contamination of the hair follicle of an eyelash. Eye stye is caused by staphylococcal bacteria. This disease does not affect the vision. It is tiny inflammatory tumor on the base of eyelid. It is also called by hordeolums by some people. An Eye stye happens when staphylococcal bacteria infect one of the tiny glands at the base of the eyelid hairs and then becomes inflamed. An infection bacterium is usually passed from one hair shaft to another when rubbing it to relieve itching. It is commonly appear as small bumps on the base of eyelids.

A chalazion is a painless swelling of the meibomian glands. A stye generally is a painful, localized swelling. The entire lid may be swollen. A pimple/limp like thing grows at the eyelid, that can be visible at outside as well as inside of eyelid. This is not painful to the vision. This problem could happen in any age. Preventive criterions for eye stye include always washing hands before touching the eyes and keeping good eye hygiene, especially for contact users.

Styes are generally harmless and will go away after several days on their own as your body combats the infection. An infection bacterium is usually transferred from one hair shaft to another when rubbing it to relieve itching. A stye resembles like nothing more than an irritating bump on the eyelid. And this is usually true. But untreated styes sometimes spread and become severe infections. It is necessary not to squeeze or try to puncture the lesion, this only worsens the infection. The watering of the eye occurs due to this.

Sometimes patient could get fever or difficult vision. Eating boiled potatoes, white bread, pudding and confectionery are other causes of eye stye. Occassionally, it can be developing by rubbing the eye with infected hand. A chalazion can betimes be mistaken for a stye. A chalazion is a lump on the eyelid which is not caused by bacteria, but caused by a clogged mucous gland under the eye.

Causes of Eye stye

The common causes and risk factor's of Eye stye include the following:

  • The chief cause of stye is the staphylococcal organisms eyelid infections, but other organisms may be linked.
  • Using mascara, eyeliner or other eye products.
  • Weakness of the immune system.
  • Infection of oil- secreting glands.
  • Eating boiled potatoes, white bread, pudding and confectionery are other causes of eye stye.
  • Rubbing the eye with contaminated hand.

Symptoms of Eye stye

Some sign and symptoms related to Eye stye are as follows:

  • Swelling of a certain area that normally appears as a bump.
  • Discomfort when blinking.
  • Swollen, red, tender upper or lower eyelid.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Stinging, burning and itching on the affected area.
  • Sensitivity to light.
  • Frequent watering in the affected eye.

Treatment of Eye stye

Here is list of the methods for treating Eye stye:

  • Apply warm compresses for several minutes 3 to 4 times regularly.
  • OTC topical medications are also present to treat eye stye.
  • Application of prescribed antibiotic drops may also be used to help fight the infection.
  • Topical antibiotics may be used for recurrent lesions.
  • An antibiotic cream is also prescribed by the doctor to get relief from symptoms of eye stye.
  • Surgical drainage of the stye may also be necessary if the stye is not responding to treatment.
